What I’m Loving Wednesday 5.1.13

1. Today is May 1. I’ve always loved the first day of each month because it feels like a fresh start. We were reminded at the gym that the first day of Summer is only 27 days away. Use this as a gentle reminder to stay on track with your eating and fitness. Don’t you want to be proud of all your hard work when you hit the beach?

2. I’m so happy I’m sticking with GoPerformance. Each class is a total body workout so I’m seeing results in areas that I hadn’t been focusing on, specifically core strength. I was really excited about this challenge: planking on medicine balls. Planking is one thing, but those balls roll around so you have to keep them still the entire time. medicine ball plank

Also, the guy behind me was doing “anyhows” but appears to be doing a monkey dance. I can’t stop laughing at it.

3. All these insane workouts allow me to relax about my eats a couple days a week. On Saturday, Logan and I went to The Macintosh for dinner. We both agree that it’s easily one our favorite bars and restaurants to eat at in Charleston. The bar is where you should both eat and drink. We had our favorite insanely unhealthy appetizer, The Butcher Plate: bologna, pork rillette, Guinea hog ham, lardo, foie gras duck liver parfait.IMG_4389

Can you say “oink, oink”? We also tried the Ramp Cavatelli with sugar snap peas, slow cooked egg, pancetta, and ramp butter. I didn’t love the chewiness of the pastas, but the vegetables and broth were good.IMG_4390

Brace yourselves for the next dish. For the first time ever, we both tried soft shell crab. Oh. My. Gosh. I can’t stop talking about how good it was. It was served with asparagus, Ambrose Farm’s sugar snap peas, ramps,  and red leaf lettuce in a fine herbs pistou.

Soft shell crab is only in season for a couple more weeks so hurry and get some! The Macintosh on Urbanspoon

4. For someone who rarely watches tv (I’m always writing or reading!), I’ve fallen victim to reality tv. I’m ashamed to admit how much I love Bravo’s LA Shrinks and Real Housewives of Orange County.

la shrinks

I can’t stand most of the housewives. Lydia is okay (so far) but Heather is definitely my favorite.real housewives of orange county

Did anyone catch The Queen of Versailles documentary? I have so much to say about it, someone please discuss this with me!

5. I still have a brain though. I started re-reading The Great Gatsby to prepare for the new moving coming out May 10th. Who wants to go see this?

6. This poster shows you the vitamins in fruits and vegetables. How fun is this? We should all plaster it in our dining rooms.
What’s your favorite local/seasonal item right now? Favorite reality show? Favorite book turned movie?

I cannot WAIT for The Great Gatsby. I was thinking of rereading it too… totally going opening night, totally dressing up. 😀

Queen of Versailles. I watched it 1 1/2 times (it came on again immediately after?). I don’t know if I have ANYTHING to say about it?

I like Heather – cannot stand any of the other OC ladies – but I keep watching!

    • yes, reread it too! oooh dressing up? please take pics!
ok, the QoV…yeah. speechless at first but oh man. what is that woman wearing?!?!

  • Jane Graybeal

So I just looked at the link for your gym and it looks super similar to the gym we go to here in Tahoe (Elevated Fitness)–I love going to conditioning class because it’s different every time and it’s such an amazing workout (that I didn’t have to take the time to plan out!) Also, I was just about to download the Great Gatsby on my Kindle because I definitely want to reread it before the movie comes out , so so excited about that! I’m also really excited that I am coming to Charleston in a month and a half!! We need to make some plans soon! 🙂

    • ooh that’s awesome! i love not having to plan too. yes, let’s plan something for sure!! email me!

  • Mona

omg summer is so soon! yipeeeee! i find that i naturally just start eating more of those healthy foods around this time, but its def a good remind to stay in check

okay, queen of versailles is cray cray! I have no words about that movie, its just so insane! the way how the couples relationship sort of falls apart when money becomes an issue is just so insanse to watch… ah clearly i cannot put my feelings about this movie into words lol

and i can’t wait for the great gatsby!! I actually just did a blog post about it the other day -http://findthejaguarshark.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/baz-lurhmann-was-born-to-direct-the-great-gatsby/ 🙂 gah it looks amazing.

    • you’re so right. as the weather gets better, so does the produce, and so does our eating habits. thank goodness!

  • I bought an iPad a few weeks ago and the first iBook I bought was The Great Gatsby to re-read before the movie comes out! So SO different reading it now than in high school. Can’t wait for the movie!

All of our farmers markets came back last week, I can’t wait to hit ’em up. I love asparagus when it’s in season! And lemons…sooo many lemons this month.

    • it IS so different than reading it in HS. i understand the vocab now. ha! i loooooooove lemons this time of year. if you have any yummy recipes, lmk!

  • itzyskitchen

YUM soft shell crab!! I’m a total LA Shrink addict. I love trashy bravo shows ;).

What’s your favorite local/seasonal item right now? Strawberries

Favorite reality show? Hmm- either LA Shrinks or Millionaire Matchmaker

Favorite book turned movie? uhhhh. They always seem to ruin in it for me when they make a book into a movie

    • oh phew, another LA shrink fan. how come no new episodes have been on?! can the season be over? so sad. i’m tearing up the strawberries from my csa too. so good. i also really want to go to boone hall’s U-pick if you want to join me!

  • LOVE the housewives too! Been watching the OC ones! I also like Miami and Beverly Hills! Love ya girl! Glad your kicking butt at the gym with that class!

    • miami is HYSTERICAL. i need them to come back!

  • Nichole

You look AMAZING!!! Hello?! New FB picture. Dang!

Good call to re-read the Great Gatsby.

    Happy May!!

And, sadly, I’m quite fond of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, lol.

    • hahah aw! i CANNOT do ATL. just cannot. the miami ladies make me laugh too. they’re so glam. haha.

  • Allison @ Life’s a Bowl

I’m a sucker for the Real Housewives but Beverly Hills is my favorite season – even though as you said, I can’t stand most of the women 😛 Bravo is definitely my guilty pleasure…

    • i have seen a couple episodes of BH but never got sucked in. don’t you feel like most of the shows (of all the housewives) that they’re all just screaming at each other? sometimes i have to turn the tv volume down, hahah.

  • Liziheartvegetables

Ah, that chart is so cute and colorful! I love it! And you look awesome in that plank!

    • isn’t it pretty? there’s a reason why we’re supposed to eat in color! 🙂

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin

Woah I am so impressed with that plank! I can barely do a regular one ha!

I’m really looking forward to The Great Gatsby too. I should really find my copy and reread it… the last time I read it I was 16!

  • Sam @ Better With Sprinkles

I haven’t gone to see a movie for a while, but I’m definitely going to be insisting that the boyfriend take me to see Gatsby. One of my favourite books that I read in high school!

And I’m pretty much counting down the days until berry season around here. Always my favourite seasonal food!

    • i hope your berry season starts soon!

  • Megan

Soft shell crab freaks me the eff out.

    • hahahahahaha. but it’s sooooo good.

  • I’m putting that chart on the fridge for my boys, I think it may actually make them eat veggies (they are pretty good with fruits:) I’ve had Gatsby on my to read list for so long, I need to just read it!

    • that is awesome!! post a pic if you do it. get those cuties started young! then they can impress all the ladies with their health knowledge. 😉

  • I still need to try the Macintosh. I’ve only heard good things, but every time I look at the menu I have a hard time imagining Greg being risky enough to try one of their unique dishes. I honestly don’t read much and think I “spark noted” most of the books I had to read in high school, including the Great Gatsby. The movie preview has got me so excited for it and really makes me want to read it too!!

    • whatttttt, yes, go! some of the stuff is a little intimidating. go and text me and i’ll walk you through the menu, hahah! are you excited about the movie or just leo’s face? i can’t decide which i’m happier about…

      • Haha BOTH! 🙂 But I admit I probably wouldn’t be as interested if Leo wasn’t in it.

  • Cate Hartnett

I watched the Queen of Versailles on Netflix because I thought what was playing on Bravo would be a series and not the actual documentary! First of all, I couldn’t get over how dirty their house was… And the wife just seemed clueless! 10 kitchens?!?

I love RHOC – Tamra needs medication and I love Heather.

My favorite seasonal food right now is asparagus, but I imagine I’ll be sick of it soon. I tend to OD on it then get super sick of it.

My favorite book turned movie is the Devil Wears Prada. I’m an intellectual, you know. 🙂

    • Ok, seriously, I thought it was going to be a show too. I WISH. It was so bad but I couldn’t stop watching it…several times. She did seem really clueless. A skating rink in your home? And the dead lizard? No.

Tamra needs a chill pill for sure. She screams a lot!

  • Ashley Hrovat

Summer can’t come soon enough! The bulk of my workouts have been running, as I have a half marathon this weekend, but I’m so excited to increase my strength training during my downtime between training plans. Your gym looks awesome!

  • JoyS22

QofV – I watched that a couple of months ago and I’m still pissed off about the lizard dieing.

I’ve only had soft shell crab once and it didn’t do it for me. However, I love the Macintosh so I might be willing to try theirs.

    • haha, that was so gross! the mac’s had soooo much flavor. do it!

  • Erin Turner

I am ridiculously excited about the Gatsby movie! I wish that we could see it together. 🙂 I totally agree that the first of each month is a fresh start- very fitting for me since I was born on the first of April.

    http://thegrassskirtblog.com

    • aw! well happy 1 month of your bday! 🙂

  • Niki

Love the Macintosh – it’s currently my favorite restaurant in Charleston! We just went again on Sunday – tried that soft shell crab dish too. I’d debated about the Butcher Plate – now after seeing your pic, I need to go back soon!

    • that’s awesome! that liver parfait is insane. forget about how bad it is and just enjoy it.

  • mariafalls

OMG your plank and the monkey dude! Also, how are you smiling through that?

Definitely looking forward to some Leo action in The Great Gatsby. He just keeps getting better and better…

    • Forced smile of course. Gotta keep posing. And planking.

Gosh yes! I was not a Leo fan in high school, but he is aging like a champ!! Or should I say man…

  • De

That is an awesome poster! A tip I got from my aunt, who got it from her oncology doctor, is to attempt to eat the rainbow each day. This is super helpful to find all the food options.

  • Hundewanderer

I had to google “anyhows”, I found a video. Thanks, I learned something new 😀 I also wanted to be totally tacky and point this out: “allow me to reelax”. You may want to edit your relax. Have a good day 😀

    • hahahah! that made me laugh so hard. i appreciate it!! 🙂

  • Hahha, the guy in the background of that photo is awesome. Photobombers are so fun.
I’m SOO excited for Great Gatsby! I’m definitely re-reading before the movie! It’s always a must for me.
I love those RHW of OC they are the best for me. And now I would really like to see this queen of Versailles documentary. I did watch an interview with her, but missed that actual documentary. Fail.

    • and he didn’t even mean to photobomb! so funny. WATCH the documentary and get back to me. it’s soooo weird/bad/awful/amazing/interesting. if that is even possible…

  • Amy Florez

That butcher plate looks amazing! I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never eaten at the MacIntosh…. Soft shell crab is the yummiest!!! I’m obsessed too! OC is the best! I actually like Tamra. Yes! I want to see Gatsby!!!!

    • that liver parfait is insane good. you’ll want to order extra bread and get every bit. i can tolerate tamra at times, until she’s screaming. then i seriously have to turn the tv volume down. yay for gatsby, it’s going to be so good!
