CSA Week 9 / Fun With Melons…and Salsa!

You know the drill. Gruber Farm CSA time!! As each week goes by, I become more and more obsessed with having a weekly box of produce. The convenience. The variety. The freshness. Need I say more?DSC_0362 (1024x683)

Week 9 contents:

  • jalapeno peppers
  • tomatoes
  • green peppers
  • green beans
  • corn
  • mini watermelons!!

How cute are the watermelons? Boding and I couldn’t get over them.

Then we tossed them up in the air with joy. (I’m not ready for children.)DSC_0373 (1024x732)

And then we put them away so we could use the other goodies to make SALSA!

Xtina’s Sweet & Spicy Salsa


  • 3 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 small jalapeno peppers, diced
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tbsp. honey (secret ingredient!)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • juice of 1 lime


Place all ingredients in food processor or blender. Pulse until desired consistency is reached.

When I finished making the salsa, I had my roommate do a blind test with my salsa versus Publix’s salsa. She preferred mine! I was so excited. I felt like a younger, prettier, less pretentious Martha Stewart.

After our silliness with the watermelon and salsa, we made a seriously simple dinner:DSC_0384 (1024x683)

Cumin-roasted chicken topped with salsa and sliced avocado, corn on the cob, and Trader Joe’s spicy soy & flaxseed tortilla chips.

These chips have 6 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and 500 mg of omega 3’s per serving. They’re definitely a better alternative – no perservatives either!

How do you like your salsa?

Chunky? Pureed well? Spicy? Fruity?

Cilantro: love it or leave it?

    So, I think the farm needs to hire you to write a note/recipe that goes with each week’s bundle.I’d join just to read it ;). Those TJs chips are awesome. I like chunky salsa….Josh likes its purred….so I eat it pureed when I eat it with him.  I can take a LITTLE bit of cilantro.

  • LOL–hope the watermelons survived! I love tons of cilantro and I’m so surprised to see honey in a salsa recipe but I love a good secret ingredient.  I’ll have to try it:)

  • I have a love affair with salsa. I like it super spicy, well blended, and light on cilantro. I always want to love cilantro so bad… but I just don’t…

  • I love mild chunky salsa! I’m not a big fan of too much heat. And I love cilantro too. The more the better!

    I like my salsa pureed well; sometimes to the point of almost runny (weird I know). Sometimes chunky. I am one of those who can’t stand cilantro. It destroys my palata. I know that there are only a few of us out there – see article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/14/dining/14curious.html.

    I love my salsa pureed well, spicy, and yes to cilantro. I used to not like certain herbs but love them now that I cook more. You and Boding always crack me up!

    Those melons are the cutest! Much cuter than human babies LOL. I was thinking the other day “What am I going to do in the winter when I have to choose my own vegetables again? AHHH!”

  • I think 50% of the population likes to play with melons. 😉 

    I am really particular about my salsa. I do not like it overly puréed, then it’s just spicy raw pasta sauce. I like my salsa burn-your-mouth hot with a sweet fruity finish– like a really spicy peach or pineapple salsa.

    Mmmmm! Great looking meal! I like my salsa all of those ways…chunked or pureed well, just not too juicey. I like some substance. And just a little spicy with a hint of fruitiness (like the mango peach from Publix!) is perfect.
