Balsamic Fig Salad with Goat Cheese, Pecans, and Prosciutto

Before I left for North Carolina, my grandfather asked if I’d bring some fresh figs. There was a recipe he wanted us to make but he couldn’t find fresh figs in his area. Whole Foods to the rescue! I picked up a pint and hopped onto I-26.

Saturday evening, we decided to make salmon and vegetables to have with the salad. Although the salad was just an accompaniment to the main entrée, it ended up being my favorite part of the meal.

Balsamic Grilled Fig Salad with Goat Cheese, Pecans, and Prosciutto

(adapted from The Fresh Market)


  • 12 large fresh figs, halved
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinaigrette dressing, divided
  • 6 oz. baby spinach leaves
  • 2 oz. crumbled goat cheese
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped toasted pecans
  • 2 oz. torn prosciutto


Toss figs with 1/4 cup vinaigrette in medium bowl; set aside. Broil figs on rack, turning once, until figs are caramelized, about 4 minutes; keep warm. Arrange spinach on serving platter. Top with figs, goat cheese, pecans, and prosciutto. Just before serving, drizzle with remaining 1/4 cup dressing.

For the salmon we had also picked up at The Fresh Market, we used Ina Garten recipe for  Asian Grilled Salmon.image
I love Ina because her recipes aren’t difficult. A simple marinade of Dijon mustard, soy sauce, olive oil, and garlic was all the salmon needed.image

All weekend, we introduced my teenage brother to new vegetables. He claimed he only likes raw spinach. Weird, I know. For this dinner, we sautéed zucchini and cherry tomatoes in olive oil and oregano.IMG_0126

And what would dinner be without a bottle of wine? A dry dinner. Of course the teenager wasn’t allowed any.imageimage

All together, it was a great Summer meal. Though the heat tells me otherwise, Summer is winding down and the opportunities to enjoy grilled food are coming to a halt. Sad!image

    That salad sounds fantastic! Great family meal. Favorite salad toppings? Peas and corn are very necessary…and I love croutons :). I don’t like fish- I’ve tried to make myself, I just can’t do it :(. Favorite grilled vegetable? Eggplant!

  • Mmm it all sounds delicious. I love goat’s cheese, and I bet with the figs it was perfect. I love cheese and fruit together in a salad. Perfect combination. And fresh grilled fish!

    I was nodding my head the whole time reading this. Balsamic, figs and goats cheese – ok and candied pecans are my favorite! 

    I do love a nice grilled salmon. OK now I want some wine:)

  • That salad has my name all over it – figs and goat cheese are my favourites! I also love toasted almonds and roasted beets on my salads.

    Looks so yummy! Except I don’t do salmon. More of a mahi/tilapia kind of girl. 🙂 Fave salad topping is feta!

  • cedar plank salmon on the grill with a spicy mustard and brown sugar glaze. OH BOY!

  • 1. Goat cheese is my favorite food item of the week. I bought some at TJ’s last week and now I’m obsessed with it. Favorite way to eat it? On crackers topped with blueberries…sounds odd but it’s delicious!

    2. Favorite salad toppings: edamame, grilled chicken, black beans, cucumbers, and pineapple.

    3. Favorite grilled fish = walleye or tilapia. 

    4. Favorite grilled vegetables = white onions, zucchini, peppers, and basically everything!

  • I love grilled asparagus (or any kind of grilled veggie, really). That salmon looks great!

  • That salad looks delicious. Figs are Lennie’s favorite, so I will see if this salad will fool him into eating his greens. My Mom claims she could only stomach raw spinach leaves for a snack/meal when she was pregnant, so your brother is not alone. 

    Favorite salad topping is crunchy stuff…snap peas, red bell peppers, red onions, and carrots!

    We still need to get a grill. We have a nice patio area and summer is coming to an end. Boo

  • This salad sounds great! It sounds like it would totally pair perfect with the sauvignon blanc. My favourite grilled veggie is definitely eggplant, zucchini, or tomatoes and my favourite salad toppings are goat cheese or avocado!
