Unfortunate Events Remind Us How Fortunate We Are

If we’re friends on Facebook or you follow me on Twitter, you already know that on Tuesday, 150 Blackbaud employees were laid off. One of those employees was yours truly. I can’t say that I was totally shocked, as there had been some changes over the past few months. Blackbaud acquired Convio and there was a lot of restructuring. Apparently they got in over their heads and restructuring meant layoffs. I just can’t believe 150 people were affected — around 50 of us being from headquarters.

While yes, this is frightening, because I will have to find a new job, I’m not scared enough to let it get me down. I know these things happen for a reason, one of which is so that I can find something that is better suited to my passions and skill sets. I did enjoy my position at Blackbaud, but I wasn’t working to my full potential or in a place to grow. And I know that I can do that. Something so much better is right around the corner, and during this transition I will stay positive that it will come my way very soon.

My good friend and her fiancé also worked at headquarters — she made the cut, but he did not. Soon after leaving the office, she asked if I wanted to come drink some champagne with them. That was an obvious yes. I think we all needed some bubbly to chill out. The irony? We drank out of Blackbaud glasses. ;) Gotta stay humorous.

That evening, Danielle came right over with presents. She is an angel. She brought me wine, a pickle-shaped wine stopper, hot sauce, candy, movies, magazines, books, and the biggest wine glass I’ve ever seen. It’s so huge that it can be filled with an entire bottle of wine. IMG 2537

This afternoon, Eric was kind enough to take me to lunch at Puree. He had the Deep South Sandwich and I had the Jalapeño Cheddar Burger. Good food is a great distraction!IMG 2545IMG 2547

The outpouring of support I have already received from family, friends, and even strangers has been downright amazing. Those of you who have reached out to me are truly special people and I am so grateful that you’re in my life, however that may be. Nobody likes difficult situations; it’s human nature to reject change. But when you know in your heart that the change will bring you to a better place, you have to sit back and watch it happen with a smile.

I’m so sorry to hear about your job. Things like that are never easy. I hope you find something else that you truly love soon!

Christina – I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your job. Let me share a little story with you.

In 2008 I was laid off, as the recession started ramping up and my industry (design/branding) was becoming deeply affected. I was confused and wasn’t sure what my next move would be.

I took some time to think about what I wanted. I studied for the LSAT and took it, but knew law school wasn’t for me. Then I applied for a program in Amsterdam, that was totally me, and totally unexpectedly, I got in.

I met my now husband there, had an amazing year+ of growth and my life totally changed and became my own… just because my job made a much-needed decision for me. Now I live in Australia and am so thankful to be in this beautiful place every day, knowing it would never have happened if I didn’t get the “bad news” that day.

This is an amazing opportunity for you to look within and be true to yourself about what you want out of life, and go get it!

Rooting for you :) You’re a confident, capable person. You’ll be great!

I’m so sorry to hear this. You seem to be so outgoing (and well-connected) though.. I have no doubt that you’ll find something even better and more fulfilling soon. Best of luck, girl!

  • mariafalls

Big hugs to you. I truly believe everything happens for a reason and you’re right – this will lead to bigger and better things. I know it’s hard to see that now, but everything always works out in the end. If it hasn’t worked out, it’s not the end (memorizing Pinterest quotes come in handy sometimes).

If you need someone to chat, please please please email me. I could talk for hours about job hunting, career happiness, and Chick Fil A.

I’m unemployed at the moment (unless you count my minimum wage boutique position that I’ve acquired for clothing discounts) as well. Let’s take a road trip. We could meet in the middle of the U.S. Say, Austin, Texas?

Hang in there! I cannot wait to see what’s next for you!

I’ve been reading your blog for a few weeks now and I’m sorry to hear this. I got laid off in November of 2011 and found a new job, which i am much happier at, 3 months later. Hopefully the same will happen to you.

Sorry to hear about the downsizing at Blackbaud. I know a lot of people that work there and I think most of them made it out OK. No doubt a world of opportunities is opening up for you. You have a lot of love and support so I know you will land on your feet. Anytime you need a plate of frickles to pick you up let me know.

If anyone can make it through a layoff positively, it’s you! That wine glass reminds me of Big Karl from Cougar Town.

  • http://www.southernbel.com/ Annabel J.

I’m so proud of you for remaining positive in a sticky situation. I know I would be fighting back bitter feelings but you’ve already moved forward. Big things are in store for you, I have no doubt. – Buddhanna

I am so sorry to hear this! My husband lost his job one year ago this month – just days before our first child was born. 2012 was a tough year of the highest highs and the lowest lows for us…but there is always a silver lining, and ours was that he got to watch his daughter grow and change for the first year of her life! He has a new and wonderful job now, but (crazy as it sounds) he says he will always treasure his year of unemployment. Embrace this time and be open to what life has in store for you!

  • Mary Krulia

Oh my goodness I’m so sorry! You have a great attitude about it, though, and I’m sure you will find something you love very soon! Praying for you :)

  • http://twitter.com/TrainerPaige Paige

Christina I am so sorry :( I know it can be scary, but I am sure HUGE things are to come your way. I know it!

  • JoyS22

You have the best attitude! I know you’ll find something bigger & better. I got laid off 4 years ago literally a week before Christmas. I was completely blindsided. Here I was hoping for an end of the year bonus, instead I lose my job. Not the best Christmas I’ve had but I’m very thankful because I learned so much from that experience. Long story short, four months later I found a great job. I still have that job and it’s only gotten better. There’s no way that I would’ve gotten this job without that other job that I was laid off from. I know it’s trite but I do believe things happen for a reason and when one door closes, another one opens. Can’t wait to see what’s around the corner for you!

  • Emily

already told you this, but LOVE you girlie. You’re so much bigger than where you were and I honestly cannot friggin wait to see what adventure you tackle next.

  • http://soakandsimmer.blogspot.com Carly

I’m sorry! :( Adam texted me a heads up earlier that day and I was worried about everyone in that office. I know you’re going to bounce back fine and be happier wherever you end up! Charleston Digital Corridor routinely has job postings if you haven’t checked there yet.

  • http://twitter.com/chatterboxcra Chelsy Abraham

Oh man gal! Everyday I find out more and more people I know were part of the cut. I can’t believe that just 3 years ago I was part of one of the biggest hirings BB had done and now they’re doing this massive layoff-you’re definitely right, they got in over their heads. But you’re also right, the position you were in did not utilize your all skills to their full potential.

  • Luci

Thinking about you, Christina! I know something great is in store for you!

  • Erin @ The Grass Skirt Blog

I was so sorry to read about this on FB, but I know you will find something even better. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. Why don’t you extend your search to Charlotte, so we can be besties? LOL. Love your attitude as always!

  • http://twitter.com/hjlongmore Hannah Longmore

What a bummer, but keep the positive attitude and you’ll be just fine, I have no doubts!

  • http://twitter.com/starsinthecity Christina

That sucks :( Something even better will be coming your way, keep rocking it!

  • kerr

I will let you know if I hear of anything. Keep up the great attitude…I know you will! And rock the 1/2 marathon!

You’re so right everything happens for a reason and the next best thing for you is right around the corner! Way to keep your head up! Wine is such a blessing during these times;) Those presents are pretty darn awesome.

  • KiKi

This could be the best thing to happen to you. You are too passionate, smart and creative to be in a job where you don’t shine. You’ll do great Saturday! Have you planned your after run dinner??

  • http://twitter.com/ThisItalianRach Rach

Oh friend, I’m sorry this happened. Though in the long run, hopefully this will be a huge blessing! You really have such a great attitude about this, friend!

  • Hundewanderer

I’m sorry you’re forced to go through this transition, but having said that, you are a very bright woman, I know great things will come to your life. Go get ‘em tiger!

  • Tony

Don’t know you personally and never met but am a foodie and always love your blog and your outlook on life… Being a little older maybe a little wiser, it always sucks to be laid off/fired no matter how we try to rationalize it. Be pissed and angry then as its been said before the reason why will become apparent as you find something better and become a better person because of what happened. Chin up, cry it out if ya gotta cry it out and on to the next! You’ll be fine.

  • Tony

Ever thought of social media ads/branding? Like the modern connection girls in town? Heck, I’ve tried to give them business and they won’t return a call…

  • Kristie

I’m so sorry to hear this not so spectacular news of yours but to be honest, you are SUCH a happy, positive and vibrant person that I really can’t even see you doing anything less than something completely amazing, which is no doubt now RIGHT around the corner. And I’m looking forward to getting to read about all the adventures that will no doubt be coming your way :) All the best!

  • Lauren

I hope your new blog is up and running soon because it really needs more pizazz to live up to your bright personality! The job loss is bummer, but your attitude is admirable and I know there must be a line of employers excited to snatch you up once they find out you’re available! Good luck!
