Healthy Eating Tips For Dining Out

Birthdays. Bridal luncheons. Holiday parties. Work events.

It’s inevitable that we eat out. There’s just no avoiding it. Instead of fearing the extra calorie binge that we so often endure while dining out, why not prepare ourselves ahead of time? Eating out doesn’t have to be a diet disaster. With these easy tips, you can feel a bit more comfortable dining out…and in your jeans.

1. Do not starve yourself all day to “make up” for what you will be eating later. This is not a smart idea. Starving yourself throughout the day sends your metabolism crashing. By the time you get to dinner, you’ll be so hungry that you’ll gorge yourself with too much food in one sitting. You’re better off eating as you normally would all day long.

2. Order water first. Though most nicer restaurants automatically give you a glass of water, some may assume you just want an alcoholic beverage. Ask for a glass of water and drink up. We often mistake thirst for hunger, so having a glass before dinner will not only hydrate you, but prevent you from eating an unnecessary amount of food. And remember, water does amazing things for your hair, skin, nails, and mood!

3. Skip the sugar bomb beverages. Say no to the fancy margaritas, cocktails, and mixed drinks. You are not on Sex & The City – put down that Cosmopolitan. Choose a light beer, glass of wine, or even a vodka soda with fresh fruit. The simple syrup in those mixed drinks is only going to tip the scales or send you straight to the dentist for a filling. Not worth it!

4. Skip the bread. I’ll be honest – if you stick a loaf of freshly-baked, warm bread in front of me, chances are (99%) I will eat it. But do I need it? No. Does it do much for me nutritionally speaking? Ha, barely. The bread basket is an empty basket. An empty basket of calories. Don’t do it! If you’re comfortable with it, you can even ask the server to not bring it out so there’s no temptation.

5. Ask for condiments and/or dressings on the side. It seems that chefs really want you to know how good their sauces are, and to do that, they load your dish up with it. Have you ever noticed that your deli sandwich has much more mayonnaise on it than you would have applied at home? Or that your salad is often sopping wet with an oil-based dressing? By asking for it the side, you can apply only what you need or dip your food into it. I assure you that you will use much less.

6. Choose a main dish that has a lot of vegetables. If possible, go for steamed, grilled, or roasted vegetables rather than sautéed or deep-fried.

7. Once your entrée arrives, split it into two portions. If it’s not a dish that you can easily separate into two, make a mental note of how much is on your plate and try to only eat half. You’ll most likely end up being satisfied once you’re finished, and (bonus!) you have leftovers for the next day. You’re saving money and saving calories.

8. Sharing is caring. A girlfriend of mine and I  often have trouble resisting ordering an appetizer ahead of our entrees. A win-win solution is to order one appetizer and one entrée and split them both. It costs less, you save calories, and you get to try more than one dish.

9. Think about dessert. Think about it really hard. Yes, I know, the options probably sound amazing given the way your server read them to you. I bet you even saw a twinkle in her eye when she told you about the warm bread pudding with a side of vanilla bean ice cream. You might have even drooled. But do you need it? Is it worth it? That’s up to you. As a huge proponent of eating dessert (I eat healthy during the week, why not?), I know this is a tough decision. Should your answer be “Yes, I really need dessert,” go for it. I’m not going to judge you. Go for the fruit-based desserts if you can. Sorbet is a great option as it is lower in calories and sugar.

10. Don’t feel guilty after your meal. I bet you had a great time with friends and enjoyed yourself. Tomorrow is a new day and you can jump right back on the healthy eating train just in time for breakfast! Grab a container of low-fat Greek yogurt, a piece of fresh fruit, and start your day right.

Which of these do you follow?

What are YOUR tips?

Where was this last weekend when I consumed three plates of dessert?!?!?

Jk. I totally wanted that dessert. However, I don’t think I would have been so hungry at that point in the meal had I not skimped on other areas. It was a bridal shower where they bring out the food to share family style. I had jsut a little bread, skipped the appetizer, had a little salad and a little pasta. Waited for the main dish… Turns out the pasta was the main dish. I didn’t realize this before they had taken it away and brought out the tiramisu and I was still hungry. Screwed myself on that one…

haha that sounds like a story straight out of my life.

    Light beer makes me vomit.

Great tips….except I can’t chug the water before the wine ;)  Haha.  I do indulge in a piece of bread though, but can usually skip dessert unless it’s something really unique that I can’t make at home.

Love the idea of sharing…my friend and I did this Friday, then on Saturday I took half my calzone home when were out in SF.

These are amazing tips!! If I’m trying to eat healthy I usually try to avoid going out to eat… so much temptation! But this proves that it is possible to eat healthy when you go out. I’m definitely keeping these in mind! :) PS. Love your new blog design!

you’re right – it’s SO much easier to stay healthy if you just stay in!

  • Mary Krulia

These are awesome! I follow the “split in half” tip every time I go out, and I always have to justify a dessert. I definitely need to drink a glass of water before the meal!

Such great tips. I admit the bread basket is ALWAYS my downfall.  I like it better than dessert sometimes–I have to keep it away from me!

  • mariafalls

Oh that darn bread basket. We are in constant battle. Sometimes they have wheat rolls or a multi-grain loaf, so I stick to that and make my husband eat all the white carbs. He burns them off just by sitting up. Boys.

BOYS! ugh they can eat everything.

  • Erica Sorkin

Your blog is looking so pretty! Love. Great tips. If the bread is unique/extra awesome- I eat the bread. If its not- SKIP! Haha…we are not on S&TC

      thank you my dear!

  • Jennifer Niemeyer

I love the bread basket too! YUMMY! Great tips!

    Lots of good tips Christina!

Especially the non-starving one – Often when I go out for dinner with people they’ll attack the bread basket because they’ve barely eaten all day. So basically, made themselves miserable all day, and then they’ll probably eat way too much and feel sick all evening. Not my idea of a good time!

I love all of these tips–especially the splitting an app and an entree with a friend!

I typically have a bite or a sip of stuff I like and go nuts on the stuff I love. If I’m not crazy about the meal, I will pick at it. No use eating something I don’t LOVE. I rather talk instead.

Great tips! I could learn a thing or two from these. ;) I’m guilty of almost always eating from the bread basket, especially when it’s freshly baked bread. But if it seems like it just came out of a package, I’ll leave it.

One of my tips is to order a salad (dressing on the side) as an appetizer so that the fiber can help fill me up a bit before my meal!

Great post!  I pretty much follow all of these.  It’s easy to refrain from alcohol though when you’re pregnant.  LOL.  As for the bread basket, I have a rule that I only eat the bread if it is fresh and warm.  Otherwise, it isn’t worth the splurge to me.  Same goes with dessert- I’ll only order it if it’s something that I love and then I’ll try to split it with someone.

i think half of it is the mind set. go to enjoy your event, the people, and laugh! it burns calories. ;-)

I like this post a lot! I relate. I drink wine. I rarely order mixed drinks at a restaurant. I hold off until bar time for my whiskey sour. I always ask for things on the side. I NEVER share. I always eat the bread, but I never butter my bread. I always order the most veggie heavy meals. I’m careful though. So many “vegetarian” dishes are smothered with cheese. My favorite go-to is a seafood dish. Usually, seafood doesn’t pair with cheese, but instead, asparagus and squash tends to be the side. I never order dessert. Instead, I order coffee. It’s the perfect end to a meal!

Amen! This our commandments:) It’s easier to not even start on the bread basket than to have a bite. As for the sugar bombs, couldn’t agree more. Have a nice glass of vino and relax.

First of all, LOVE LOVE LOVE the new header…so you! Second these are great tips! Going out to eat is really where I struggle…Cam and I honestly do eat super healthy/clean during the week, so when we travel and take our little weekend getaways, we always go out to eat (usually Friday and Saturday night) and the wheels sort of just fall of. I am bad at resisting the bread basket, I usually tend towards pasta, and we always get dessert (we usually split it, but still). I’m fine with having an indulgent meal now and then, my problem is when “now & then” every weekend/the entire weekend…I’m working on it :)

My mother-in-law does nearly every one of those things (except that she doesn’t drink at all so she just sticks with either water or 1/2 sweet tea 1/2 regular). She is such a beast when it comes to eating healthy. :)

  • http://www.a-taste-of-confidence.com/ Jess@Atasteofconfidence

I have all but given up on not eating the bread. I generally decide to do the bread or dessert, and usually end up picking the bread — unless it’s not warm, then I’ll choose the ice cream sundae, haha.

I finally have learned to stop feeling guilty after a meal out. Why should we feel guilty about celebrating life? It’s too short not to sit back and enjoy it. When you eat well all (or maybe it’s more like most) week long, I don’t think there is anything wrong with an indulgence. I will never remember that I was super healthy and minded all my eating p’s & q’s….but I will always remember the awesome memories made while cutting loose for a evening with fab friends, fab food, and fab wine!
