Gnu Foods Flavor & Fiber Bar Reviews!

As we all know, I am fiber’s #1 fan. I was overjoyed when my new friends from Gnu Foods agreed to let me sample their Flavor & Fiber bars. The company was gracious enough to send me a box of 14 bars: 2 each of their 7 delicious flavors! I was super excited to try these bars for several reasons:
  • Each bar has 12 grams of fiber – more than I’ve seen in any other bar!
  • Even with all that fiber, each bar is only 130-140 calories
  • They are all natural — yay for no processed fiber like those stupid gummies I was eating
  • They do not contain HFCS or added sugars – they are sweetened with natural fruit juices
  • No saturated fat
  • They are vegan
  • The flavors sound incredible!
Banana Walnut:

This bar tastes like homemade banana bread. It has a very natural banana flavor. It is both chewy and nutty with real walnuts throughout. This bar would be great warmed up or even better, crumbled over some vanilla fro yo! I thought it was very interesting to see plums as an ingredient in this bar. I rate this bar a 10 out of 10.
Chocolate Brownie:
This bar tastes like a rich, decadent, healthy brownie. A healthy brownie? Yes, please. The richness comes from the dark chocolate chips. This would also be delicious warmed up. I’d be in heaven if they ever decided to add mint to this bar. I give this bar a 9.5 out of 10.
Cinnamon Raisin:
My absolute favorite flavor! The best bar Gnu Foods makes, hands down. It has a lovely cinnamon flavor and real raisins. It was a perfect mixture of flavors – one flavor didn’t overwhelm the other. I really really like this bar. It deserves a 10 out of 10.
Espresso Chip:
This was my least favorite of the flavors. It wasn’t bad at all, but espresso flavored foods just aren’t for me. Another friend of mine said it was her favorite flavor. This bar gets a 6 out of 10.
Lemon Ginger:
This bar had a light and refreshing lemon taste, but the ginger was too strong. You have to really like ginger to enjoy this bar. At one point while I was eating it, I actually sniffled.  I give this bar a 6 out of 10.
Orange Cranberry:

This flavor was great. It was very refreshing and I could immediately smell the orange flavor as I opened it. While I was eating it, my roommate, sitting a few feet away asked if I was eating an orange flavored bar! Yum. I didn’t taste much cranberry flavor, but I love this combination. I give this bar a 9 out of 10.
Peanut Butter:
This was a better than your basic peanut butter bar. The chewiness and light crunch give it that extra oomph that I think it needs to set it apart from other peanut butter flavored bars. This bar would be amazing with some jam smeared on top. I would give this an 8.5 out of 10.
Conclusion:
I highly recommend these bars if you need to get your fiber fix. Although a bit pricey at around $1.99 a bar, they are a great way to get your fiber on without a massive amount of calories. Instead of eating cardboard flavored bars, or adding powders to your water that make you want to yak, pick up a couple Gnu bars and get your digestive system on tract. Haw haw haw. My preferred flavors in order are: 1)Cinnamon Raisin; 2)Banana Walnut; 3)Chocolate Brownie; 4)Orange Cranberry; 5)Peanut Butter; 6)Lemon Ginger; 7)Espresso chip.
Thanks again to Gnu Foods for sending me such a great package! :)

Have you ever tried any of the Gnu bars? Which flavor would you most like to try?

I’ve been curious about those bars and I’d love to try them! I’d be most interested in, well, all of them, but espresso chip intrigues me the most.

If these were gluten free I’d totally go for the banana one :)

i’ve had those and i like the fruit flavors over the chocolate/pb ones which is never the case for me :) the orange one was really different and just tasted awesome!

I have never had one, but OMG those Orange Cran or the PB ones sound amazing. I don’t like a lot of chocolate so I think those would be best for me:)

Woww–I can’t believe each bar contains 12 grams of fiber! I love banana bread, so I’ll have to buy one next time I don’t have time to bake!

Great idea on warming up the chocolate Gnu bar! I have tried banana nut and REALLY liked it. Also I love how you said you were fiber’s #1 fan. Too funny! I might be it’s #2 fan then! But that sort of implies certain things and we just won’t go there… =P

  • http://www.foraysinthekitchen.com/ Rae

I’ve always wanted to try the Gnu bar… but have a fear of all the fiber in one place. Tell me honestly: Any “gascious” issues afterwards?!

  • http://www.ahealthysliceoflife.com/ Brittany @ A Healthy Slice of Life

Oh… banana walnut sounds flippin delish! Are these sold in a lot of places? Or mostly health food stores? I’d love to try ‘em!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/15289244603202658212 Chelsea

If these were nut-free, I would love the espresso chip one. I’m imagining it tasting like a Coffee Crisp chocolate bar. :D

    I’ve never had the gnu bars, but I’ve seen them around. I’m not really a big bar kind of girl, but those look delish! I don’t think I’d turn one down if you know what I mean (;

Plus you can’t beat that they’re all natural! Awesome review post!

Thanks for the reviews! I’ve had the banana walnut flavor and really enjoyed it…they’re definitely a “cleaner” alternative to Fiber One bars, which is worth the price!!

  • http://lisaou11.wordpress.com/ Lisa (I’m an Okie)

I havent tried the Gnu bars but Ive heard they are tasty!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/11649534983661491293 Nicci@NiftyEats

I’d love to try the ”orange cranberry” bar. I like that they have a lot of fiber. Is nice to find a bar that will keep you full with some fruit in the morning or at snack time. I need to find these at the grocers. I may have seen them at the natural food store.

    Great review!

I haven’t had all of the flavors, but the Banana Walnut is definitely my favorite of the ones I’ve tried.

  • http://simplyshaka.wordpress.com/ simplyshaka

Awesome stats on the bars and loving the flavors. Bummer about the espresso though, as that would be the first flavor I would try but the banana walnut sounds absolutely delish.

xo…they all look like poo…i hope you didn’t eat them all, once i went on a family camping trip and my sister ate too many fiber bars…it wasn’t pretty…

  • http://www1.healthyexposuresblog.com? Jessica (Healthy Exposures)

Laughed reading this – I loved the espresso chip and thought the lemon ginger needed MORE ginger! haha. I’m wondering if the fact that I took it out of the wrapper and put it into a plastic baggie for a couple days (sealed) changed the flavor a bit :(
Otherwise – I love these bars. Such a great texture and amazing ingreds & stats.

I love Gnu bars! I’ve only tried two flavors and they were both great. I’d reallly like to try the cinnamon raisin!

GNU bars sit like a brick in my belly and I lurveeee them. I’ve only tried the cinnamon raisin and banana walnut and was equally obsessed with both. I want the espresso chip one though!

Great review! And I have had the chance to try Gnu Bars :-) . I liked them for the most part, but I get so much fiber in my diet that I don’t really need them. They would be great to bring on vacation though, since I definitely don’t get as much fiber in my diet then.

  • http://www.quarterlifecupcake.com/ Alex @ IEatAsphalt

I went to China for two weeks and took a ton of Gnu bars with me, knowing that they would probably be a majority of the fiber I would eat. They were lifesavers with all of the rice we ate. The banana walnut were definitely my favorite. They are worth every penny if you know you wont be able to eat whole grains/fresh fruit for a while.

I still haven’t tried those bars! They sound great though. I’d love to try the Orange Cranberry.

Great reviews! I’ve never tried them but would TOTALLY go for the PB!!

  • http://ww2.fitandfabulouslife.com/ Melinda

I LOVE Gnu bars- especially the chocolate brownie- YUM!

The Bobo’s oat bars- I really liked the cinnamon raisin one- they are very filling, I found that 1/2 a bar worked quite well as a snack.

  • StayingStrong
